NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang made headlines today, declaring 'this week is the dawn of Japan AI' and previewing a massive AI partnership with Japanese conglomerates. Sony, SoftBank, Toyota — the biggest names in Japan are reportedly lining up with NVIDIA. So what does this mean for Korean chipmakers?

First, understand what NVIDIA actually sells

NVIDIA makes GPUs (Graphics Processing Units). These days they're less about gaming and more about AI training. Training a model like ChatGPT requires massive computation — and NVIDIA's chips handle that faster than anything else on the market. That's why every AI company in the world is in line to get them.

NVIDIA's GPUs need HBM — and SK Hynix makes the world's best

So when NVIDIA rolls out AI infrastructure across Japan, AI chip demand goes up — and HBM demand goes up with it. For SK Hynix, Japan's AI boom is actually good news. The AI servers being deployed in Japan will likely run on SK Hynix memory.

What about Samsung? The picture is a bit more complicated

Samsung also makes HBM, but its share of NVIDIA's supply is still smaller than SK Hynix's — it's been playing catch-up on qualification. Meanwhile, Japan's major chip players — Kioxia (NAND flash) and Renesas (automotive and industrial chips) — aren't in direct competition with Korean AI memory. They serve different markets. So this isn't a head-to-head Korea vs. Japan battle.

So there's no threat at all?

Not right now — but it's worth watching long-term. The Japanese government is pouring massive funding into AI semiconductor development. SoftBank pledged $100 billion in U.S. AI investment, and domestic chip factory discussions are underway. Today it's not a threat to Korea, but if Japan builds its own AI chip ecosystem over the next decade, the calculus could change.
