One Company, Record Profits and a First-Ever Loss at the Same Time

Two opposite stories came out of Samsung Electronics' results at once: chips earned well, and the division covering appliances and mobile posted its first-ever loss. How can both be true of the same company? The answer contains a key habit for reading earnings news.

One company, two report cards

Large companies run several businesses of very different character. Samsung is split broadly between making semiconductors and selling to consumers — TVs, refrigerators, smartphones. The company reports these separately as business segments. So overall operating profit can be positive while an individual segment bleeds.

Why do they diverge?

Because the two businesses make money in fundamentally different ways. Semiconductors are sold to other companies. When more firms build data centers and expand AI servers, orders pile up. In a period of heavy AI investment like this one, revenue can climb sharply.

Appliances and smartphones, by contrast, depend on individual consumers' wallets. When prices rise and budgets tighten, people delay replacing a refrigerator and keep a phone longer. On top of that, competition in these markets is fierce, making price increases hard to push through. A National Assembly Budget Office report found Korean manufacturing splitting sharply between semiconductors and everything else — the same divide showing up inside a single company.

So how should you read results?

When you see earnings news, do not stop at the company-wide number — go one level deeper. Check which segment produced the profit, and what share of total profit it represents. If one segment carries most of the earnings, that stock effectively trades on the conditions of that one business.
